Electrical Distribution: The Full Supply House — Not Just Solar
Direct-distributor coverage of Square D, Eaton, GE, Siemens, and Schneider Electric — breakers, panelboards, transformers, wire, conduit, motor controls, and switchgear from a single Louisville, KY warehouse with contractor pricing and net-30 terms.
PES Distribution is a full electrical supply house. Most contractors first find us through portlandiaelectric.supply — the solar-first storefront covering 169 authorized brands and roughly 85,000 SKUs. The catalog is identical on pesdistribution.com, but the framing is different: this side of the house leads with the four brands electrical contractors buy every week — Square D, Eaton, GE, and Siemens — plus Schneider Electric for the industrial and infrastructure jobs. Same warehouse, same net-30 terms, same tech-line escalation, same will-call desk at 1507 Portland Avenue, Louisville, KY 40203. Different pitch, because a commercial electrician sizing a 400 A meter main should not have to scroll past inverters and PV racking to find a Milbank U4801-O-K3L or a Square D MC0816B1200RCT.
This pillar is the map for the four supporting guides below — a brand comparison of residential and commercial breakers; a load-center and meter-combo selector by amp rating and utility territory; a motor control guide covering starters, VFDs, and contactors; and the wire, cable, and conduit distribution reference. If you install service equipment, panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, motor circuits, or MC-cable runs for a living, everything you'd cross-reference during a take-off lives on the pages linked at the bottom of this article.
North American electrical distribution has consolidated around a small number of manufacturers. Any distributor that claims to be a full supply house has to stock — and be authorized to sell — the same core five that every wholesaler, big-box, and industrial channel carries. That list is: Square D (a Schneider Electric brand, dominant in residential and commercial 480 V), Eaton (formerly Cutler-Hammer, dominant in industrial and 600 V-class switchgear), General Electric (now GE Industrial Solutions under ABB in some product lines, still the residential-service default in a huge swath of the country), Siemens (the strongest European-heritage line in NA, especially in medium-voltage and process control), and Schneider Electric for the industrial, data-center, and infrastructure work where Modicon PLCs, Altivar VFDs, and Masterpact ACBs are the incumbent spec.
PES Distribution is authorized for all five. The distinction matters because authorized means manufacturer warranty passes through, tech support escalations route directly, and the price is inside the manufacturer's contractor rebate program — versus grey-market or surplus inventory where an installer can get burned six weeks after energization when the warranty registration bounces.
| Brand | Owned by | Res. specialty | Commercial specialty | Industrial / MV specialty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Square D | Schneider Electric | QO, Homeline load centers | Powerpact H/J/L, I-Line panelboards | Masterpact NW / NT ACBs |
| Eaton | Eaton Corp | BR, CH load centers | Series C molded case, PRL panelboards | Magnum DS / VacClad-W MV switchgear |
| GE | ABB / GE Industrial | PowerMark Plus, TL load centers | Spectra + Evolution panelboards | AKD-8 / Entellisys switchgear |
| Siemens | Siemens AG | PL, P1, P2 load centers | Sentron / P4 panelboards | Type GM-SG MV switchgear |
| Schneider Electric | Schneider Electric | Wiser residential (import) | Blokset LV switchboards | PIX / MCset MV switchgear, Altivar VFDs |
How the five brands compare on a real 200 A residential service
- Square D QO — 200 A main breaker load center with 40 QO 1-inch spaces, HOM (Homeline) for the value tier. Meter-main options up to 400 A.
- Eaton BR / CH — BR is the value line (1-inch), CH is the premium 3/4-inch (more spaces per inch). CH is the strongest arc-fault / GFCI branch coverage.
- GE PowerMark Plus / TL — long-run OEM incumbent in a lot of Southeast utility territories. Meter combos through 400 A.
- Siemens PL / P1 / P2 — 1-inch QP breakers, aluminum bus standard, copper bus on request. Combination arc-fault / ground-fault QAF2 breakers.
- Schneider (non-Square D) — Rare on straight residential in NA. Where it appears, it's usually an Acti9 DIN-rail load center in a data-closet or a commercial-MDU application.
A full supply house is defined by breadth: the range of product families you can pull from a single PO without splitting the order across three vendors. PES Distribution's electrical inventory covers the eight families below — the same eight that every contractor building service equipment, feeders, and branch circuits touches on a normal week.

⚠ Grey-market and surplus breakers are the #1 field-failure category we see.
Every SKU PES Distribution ships is sold under a factory-authorized channel agreement — warranty registers, tech support routes, and the AIC label on the breaker is guaranteed to match the sticker. If a lot of molded-case breakers looks 30 % below the market, it is almost always surplus, refurbished, or Chinese-cloned under a legitimate manufacturer's brand — and the AIC and interrupting rating do not survive a real fault. We do not stock, catalog, or drop-ship that inventory. Ever.
Every registered contractor account gets a discount tier that compresses list price. Tiers are set on trailing-12-month revenue and update quarterly. Net-30 terms are extended after a completed credit application (D&B pull + two trade references); until then the account runs on pre-payment or Net-15 on a purchasing card. Both apply across the full 85,000-SKU catalog — including the Square D, Eaton, GE, Siemens, and Schneider inventory that this page centers on.
| Tier | Trailing-12-month volume | Off list price (indicative) | Payment terms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier D — Trade | < $25,000 | Column 5 (~10–18 %) | Prepay / CC |
| Tier C — Contractor | $25,000 – $100,000 | Column 4 (~18–28 %) | Net-15 after credit app |
| Tier B — Preferred | $100,000 – $500,000 | Column 3 (~28–38 %) | Net-30 |
| Tier A — Fleet / EPC | > $500,000 | Column 2 (~38–48 %) + project quotes | Net-30, project-billed |
| Bid / Project | Any bonded job | Job-specific (blanket order) | Progress billing available |
Freight is tiered too. Small parcels ship UPS Ground on the same-day cutoff (2 PM ET); LTL and pallet freight quote inside the checkout using a live carrier-rate feed. Will-call at the Louisville warehouse is always $0 — the desk is open Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 4:30 PM. For contractors within a two-hour drive of Louisville (roughly Lexington, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Nashville, and Evansville), will-call is the fastest path: order online by 1 PM, pick up the same afternoon.
Will-call vs LTL vs UPS — what to pick
- Will-call (Louisville warehouse) — best for anything over 70 lb or fragile enclosures, or when you need it today. Zero freight cost.
- UPS Ground — best for breakers, small pipe fittings, boxes under 70 lb, single-day-response jobs. Order by 2 PM ET for same-day dispatch.
- LTL (motor freight) — best for pallet quantities of wire, conduit runs, load centers, transformers. Rate quote is live at checkout; residential delivery gets a lift-gate up-charge automatically.
- Direct-ship (DSD) from the mill — for full-reel wire orders or transformer quantities the Louisville warehouse doesn't hold. We coordinate the release; you get the mill invoice at contractor pricing.
Federal, state DOT, utility, and school-construction projects increasingly carry a Buy America / Build America Buy America (BABA) requirement under the 2021 IIJA. Iron and steel content — including conduit, wire jackets, enclosures, and transformer cores — has to be melted and manufactured in the United States. PES Distribution flags every BABA-compliant SKU in the catalog with a USA-MFG attribute and can generate a per-line certification letter on request.
| Product family | BABA-compliant lines we routinely stock |
|---|---|
| Conduit (RMC, IMC, EMT) | Wheatland (USA-melted steel), Allied Tube & Conduit, Republic Conduit |
| PVC Conduit (Sch 40/80, DB-120) | JM Eagle, Cantex, Carlon (all US mfg) |
| Building wire (THHN/THWN-2/XHHW-2) | Southwire USA-manufactured lines, Encore Wire (McKinney, TX), Cerro Wire (Hartselle, AL) |
| Enclosures (NEMA 1/3R/4/12) | Hoffman/nVent (Anoka, MN), Wiegmann (Freeburg, IL), Milbank (Kansas City, MO) |
| Transformers (dry-type) | Hammond Power Solutions (Baraboo, WI), Acme (Lumberton, NC), Sola/Hevi-Duty (Rosemont, IL) |
| Breakers / panelboards | Square D (Lexington, KY), Eaton (Cleveland, TN), Siemens (Grand Prairie, TX), GE (Plainville, CT) |
| Meter mains + meter sockets | Milbank (Kansas City, MO), Durham (Milford, IN) |
For federally-funded jobs, request a BABA certification packet at the time of quote. The packet includes the manufacturer's certificate of origin, the mill test report (for iron/steel), and the component-country-of-origin breakdown for anything that combines domestic and non-domestic content. Turnaround is 2–3 business days.
Confirm utility service point and meter socket approval
Every utility publishes a list of approved meter sockets. In Louisville that's the LG&E / Kentucky Utilities Book of Standards; for Duke Energy it's the Electric Service Requirements Guide. The socket has to be on the list or it will not pass inspection. On PES, filter meter mains by 'Utility approval' and pick your territory — Milbank U4801-O-K3L clears LG&E, Eaton MBE2040B200BTS clears Duke.
Pick the main breaker and load center to match
For a 200 A service, size the main to 200 A and pick a 40-space (or larger) 1-inch load center — Square D QO140M200PC, Eaton BR4040B200, Siemens P4040B1200CU, or GE TM4020CCU. If you're front-loading AFCI, GFCI, and DFCI, add ~20 % more spaces to leave room for combination breakers.
Size the service-entrance conductors
Per NEC 310.12 (2020/2023) the residential service can size at 83 % of the ungrounded conductor. For 200 A that's 2/0 AWG copper THWN-2 or 4/0 AWG aluminum XHHW-2. Add a GEC per Table 250.66 (usually #4 Cu bare or #2 Al to the ground rod / Ufer).
Bond the neutral at the service, isolate at every downstream panel
The main service disconnect is the only place the grounded (neutral) and grounding conductors bond. Any downstream sub-panel gets a 4-wire feed (H-H-N-G) and an isolated neutral bar. This is a Kentucky-inspection failure #1.
Add branch-circuit AFCI / GFCI / DFCI per NEC 210.8 and 210.12
2023 NEC requires AFCI on almost every 120 V 15/20 A branch in a dwelling and GFCI on kitchens, laundry, garage, unfinished basement, and bathroom circuits. For combination protection use Square D QO120CAFI, Eaton BRLAFGF120, Siemens QAF2020, or GE THQL1120AF2. Bundle-pack the whole panel from PES to save on per-unit pricing.
Grounding electrode system — rods, Ufer, water pipe
At least two 8-ft ground rods spaced 6 ft apart (unless a single-rod resistance test returns ≤ 25 Ω), a Ufer (concrete-encased electrode) if the slab is available, and the metal water pipe within 5 ft of entry per NEC 250.52 / 250.53. Bond everything with #6 Cu or larger to a single GEC.
Is PES Distribution the same company as Portlandia Electric Supply?
Yes — same authorized distributor, same 85,000-SKU catalog, same warehouse at 1507 Portland Avenue in Louisville, KY. pesdistribution.com is the electrical-first storefront (Square D, Eaton, GE, Siemens, Schneider Electric); portlandiaelectric.supply is the solar-first storefront (EG4, SolarEdge, Enphase, Sol-Ark, Fronius, SMA). One contractor account works on both sides.
Do you carry Square D commercial molded-case breakers (Powerpact H/J/L)?
Yes — H-frame (15–150 A), J-frame (150–250 A), L-frame (250–600 A), and M-frame (800–1200 A). All are authorized-channel, factory-warranted, with the correct 25/35/65/100 kAIC label matching the manufacturer sticker. See the circuit-breaker brand comparison for interrupting-rating ranges across brands.
What lead time on 400 A meter mains?
Milbank U5168-O-K3L and Eaton MBE2040B400BTS are typically in stock for same-day will-call or next-day UPS. Square D SC1632D1200RCT-class ring-type meter mains (600–1200 A commercial) run 3–5 business days from the factory. Every quote lists real-time stock status.
Do you handle BABA / Buy America certification for federal / DOT / utility work?
Yes. Request a BABA certification packet at quote time — we deliver the manufacturer's certificate of origin, mill test report (for iron/steel), and component-country breakdown in 2–3 business days. See the BABA / Made-in-USA sourcing section for the compliant brand list.
How do net-30 terms work?
Fill the online credit application (D&B pull + two trade references). Approval is typically 3–5 business days. Once approved, every subsequent order runs Net-30 with a monthly statement. Prompt-pay discount of 1 %/10 is available on request.
Can you drop-ship direct from Square D / Eaton / Siemens mills?
Yes — for full-truckload or full-reel wire quantities that exceed our Louisville warehouse capacity, we coordinate a direct mill release. You pay the mill freight; we pass the contractor pricing through. Common on wire (Southwire Carrollton), transformers (Hammond Baraboo), and enclosures (Hoffman Anoka).
Where is the warehouse and what are the will-call hours?
1507 Portland Avenue, Louisville, KY 40203. Will-call desk is Monday–Friday, 7 AM to 4:30 PM. Same-day pickup for orders placed online by 1 PM ET.
